In my short story A Long Way Down the characters jump from a space station in advanced space suits and plummet through the atmosphere, all the way to Earth, a kind of futuristic bungee cord jumping.
Reality is catching up to my fiction. Behold, the human flying squirrel: http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1778399
(Notice how they mention getting bored by the less insane jumps? That’s what I imagined in my story as well. Humanity is remarkably able to get bored by things that are ridiculously cool if they are repeated too many times…)

Like love?
Some people do seem to get bored by their loving relationships, and craving excitement, do self harmful things… I suppose it varies by individual and context how much "novelty" matters.
