My full name is Ranjit Singh Mathoda.  I was born in Chandigarh, India.

I grew up in Wisconsin, Nebraska and Connecticut.

I’ve attended the University of Illinois (where I barely escaped graduating with degrees in Aeronautical Engineering, Computer Science and Economics), Babson College (where I graduated with degrees in Finance and Operations Research), and Boston College Law School (where I obtained a juris doctorate).

I’ve worked for the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on a world trade treaty issue, at the once great law firm of Brobeck Phleger & Harrison on corporate matters, and for many years at the law firm of McGuireWoods on commercial real estate and corporate transactions. I’ve been the primary outside legal counsel to clients such as production company SekretAgent Productions and wireless startup Voce Wireless. I also was once the co-festival administrator of the South Asian diaspora art festival ArtWallah.

So what am I up to now?

I manage investments using methods I learned from Warren Buffett, Seth Klarman and others.

I work with entrepreneurs to make their business more successful. That includes advice on both business and legal matters.

I also paint, write stories and poems, read about a book a day, and dabble in designing clever things that may not change the world. Some of my writings have been noticed. I’ve been quoted in three New York Times articles, which makes my mom happy. Two of them, “How Obama Tapped Into Social Networks’ Power” and “Google Seduces With Utility”, began with a blog post I wrote called “The Coming Digital Presidency”. The third article, “Ventures Buy Shares in Private Start-Ups”, is about a company I was involved in starting.

I also really enjoy teaching. I have been a guest lecturer at the University of California at Riverside on the subject of understanding consumer behavior, to 2nd graders in San Jose about why math is awesome, and to 5th graders in Compton about defining your own career. I also taught a class called “The 10 Most Common Mistakes People Make When Investing“, which you can watch here: http://mathoda.com/2009/10/the-10-most-common-mistakes-people-make-when-investing
