Gotta love this story about an unemployed man who bartered his way from a red paperclip to ownership of a house (http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/07/07/paperclip-house.html).
Every trade he made helped him propel his story further, and attract more attention. I think what he was really doing was creating a novel story, which attracted media attention, which is always a potent asset.
