I love the ingenuity of ingenious people.  Even when their inventions don’t succeed, their attempts are inspiring.

Inventor Fred Ferguson’s company, Magenn Power Inc., is developing a tethered balloon, which uses the wind to generate power.  Birds bounce off the balloon rather than get injured the way they do with windmills.  In retrospect it seems kind of obvious that someone should make this.  Check out the pretty pictures and the video: http://www.magenn.com/

For some more of Fred’s inventions, like a balloon ship with a part that rotates backwards, check this out: http://www.magenn.com/about.php

This house, designed by a company that produces lithium batteries, apparently has all the conveniences of a modern American house, but can be disconnected from the power grid because it relies on solar energy, ceiling mounted quiet-running wind turbines, and a geothermal system, with lithium battery storage, for all of its power needs: http://www.hybridtechnologies.com/products/house_home/hybrid_living_home
